🕰️ When to Start Solids

🕰️ When to Start Solids

Knowing the Right Time to Begin Your Baby’s Food Journey

Introducing solid foods is an exciting step in your baby’s growth, but timing is key. Starting too early can increase the risk of choking or poor digestion, while starting too late may lead to nutritional gaps — especially for iron and zinc.

✅ Most babies are ready around 6 months

The World Health Organization (WHO) and pediatric experts recommend exclusive breastfeeding (or formula feeding) for the first 6 months of life. After this period, your baby’s nutritional needs increase, and solids are introduced alongside continued milk feeds.

🔍 Look for These Signs of Readiness:

Every baby is different, so it’s important to watch for developmental cues, not just the calendar:

  • 🧠 Good head and neck control
Your baby can sit upright and hold their head steady.

  • 🍽️ Shows interest in food
They watch you eat, reach out for your food, or open their mouth when food is offered.

  • 👅 Loses the tongue-thrust reflex
They no longer push food out with their tongue automatically.

  • 🪑 Can sit up with minimal support
A stable, upright position reduces the risk of choking.

  • 🖐️ Can grasp food and bring it to the mouth
A sign they’re ready to explore textures and self-feed.

⚠️ Not Quite Ready If:

  • They slouch or slump while sitting

  • They still push food out with their tongue

  • They seem disinterested or gag frequently

If unsure, always check with your pediatrician or child health nurse before starting.
